A publicity-shy retired steel fabricator and his family have finally come forward to claim one of B.C.’s biggest lottery jackpots, 21 months and $500,000 in lost interest later.In the process, Friedrich Mayrhofer tried — and failed — to challenge Canadian lotteries’ long-standing policy that winners must consent to having their name and photo published to collect the prize.
Since the winning $50-million Lotto Max ticket was drawn on March 14, 2014, people in B.C. and across Canada only knew that it was sold in Langley. A lottery insider told The Province months ago the winner was trying to keep his identity secret.
Days before the expiry date passed to claim the prize in March, the family’s lawyer presented the ticket on their behalf, saying ownership of the ticket had been transferred to a trust with unknown beneficiaries, said B.C. Lottery Corp. CEO Jim Lightbody.
